Sticking it to foreigners – ice cream company backs down after “Thais only” promotion

December 28, 2018 By Udon Thani News

An ice cream company operating at the newly opened Icon Siam in Bangkok was forced to issue a grovelling apology after they started a promotion that excluded foreigners.

Stickhouse – that sells specialist Italian gelato ice-cream on a stick – had a sign that said “For Thai Customers Only”.

Thais were lucky to get 50% off their second treat in the promotion.

But now the company has told Thaivisa that it was all a terrible mistake. Here is their apology in full:

To Our Valued Customers,

To celebrate the launch of our ICONSIAM location, we decided to offer a “buy 1, get 50% off your 2nd gelato” promotion. The promotion banner was printed in Thai because well, we’re located in Thailand. Please keep in mind, local patrons make up almost 95% of our business. Most of whom, Thai is their native language.

It wasn’t until it was recently brought to our attention that our promotion banner had been altered that we realized the mistake of our communication to our staff. We had hoped to appeal to “locals” (see: residents of the area) but the promotion was always intended to be open to all patrons.

While this promotion was meant to end on December 15th, given recent events, we will be extending it through January. If you were personally refused the promotion at our ICONSIAM location, we sincerely apologize and ask you to please contact us directly and your next visit is on us.

Staff will be vigorously retrained to ensure there are no additional miscommunications and we look forward to providing you a level of service and product that we can be proud of.

UDON THANI HOSPITAL ACCUSED OF KIDNEY THEFT

December 7, 2018 By Udon Info Admin

UDON THANI: A 33-year-old woman has accused Udon Thani Hospital of stealing her kidney during surgery to remove her womb and ovaries after a misdiagnosis that she had cancer.

Sinawaporn Homklang, a former employee of Prince of Songkla University in that province’s Hat Yai district, outlined her complaint at the provincial hall complaints centre on Friday,

She said that on June 16 she suffered pain in her abdomen. At Hat Yai Hospital she was diagnosed with an intestinal obstruction, with a recommendation she be admitted for hospital treatment.

She decided to return to her native province of Udon Thani for treatment.

The symptoms recurred upon her arrival in Udon Thani and she sought immediate treatment at Udon Thani Hospital. A duty doctor diagnosed her with chocolate cysts (noncancerous, fluid-filled cysts) in her ovaries and intestine, and recommended an injection to dissolve them.

Although her symptoms improved, a senior doctor arrived, diagnosed her with cancer and insisted that she needed surgery. The doctor rejected her request for an examination of a tissue sample before committing to surgery.

Later, she agreed to the operation. Afterwards she was informed that her womb and ovaries were removed and her rectum relocated. Her relatives were not informed of the details during the operation, Ms Sinawaporn said.

Two weeks later the hospital informed her that she did not have cancer. She made a complaint and received 240,000 baht in compensation.

On Nov 9, she returned to Udon Thani Hospital to seek the restoration of her rectum. A doctor there warned her she should not work too hard because she had only one kidney left. She was very surprised and wondered if her kidney was taken for any vested interest.

Ms Sinawaporn said she was the sole breadwinner of her family and now she could neither work hard nor have a baby. Her Singaporean boyfriend, who had planned to marry her next year, was distancing himself from her.

The director of the hospital, Dr Narong Tadadet, said the missing kidney complaint was new and would be investigated.

SLUGFEST @ BKK MALL GUARDS V. TAXIMAN [VIDEO]

November 30, 2018 By Udon Info Admin

BKK MALL GUARDS VS TAXI MAN

It’s hard to call it in the video but it looks like Taxi Man held his own against several guards who retaliated after he attacked them, for insisting he leave after rejecting a fare.  He seems like he could be Cruiserweight or Light Heavyweight and he appears to dispatch all comers.  Here’s the info:

BANGKOK — A mass melee involving a taxi driver and security guards at a downtown shopping mall this week ended up at the police station Friday after footage of it hit the internets.

Driver Khettikun Rattana and Montri Sitabian, a guard at the Terminal 21 shopping mall, were charged with fighting in public this morning for a fight which broke out two days ago over a jilted passenger. Each man was fined 500 baht.

The brawl began at about 4pm on Wednesday in front of the mall after Khettikun allegedly rejected a waiting fare, prompting Montri to ask him to leave.

Enraged, Khettikun refused to drive away and got out of the cab, at which point a wild scrum of feet and fists erupted, drawing several more security guards into the action.

Fortunately for internet voyeurs, someone recorded the incident and posted it online.

On Thursday, Terminal 21 condemned the taxi driver in a statement.

“We do not support taxis that reject passengers and do not use the meter,” the statement read. “When a security guard asked the taxi driver to leave the area to make way for other taxis, the driver exited the vehicle and assaulted the guard.”

“Terminal 21 does not support violence, however,” the statement continued, saying that the mall had contacted the security company to penalize the guards.
