The husband suspected of pouring acid on his wife’s face and into her mouth has been arrested by police in Nakhon Sawan province.  The story initially made headlines due to the tragic circumstance of the victim having been shuttled from a private hospital to a public one without proper evaluation by the private hospital staff.  The patient died en route and the resulting public outcry has been a major headline.  More below from Bangkok Post.

Police arrested a 50-year-old man late on Sunday on suspicion of killing his new wife by pouring acid over her face and into her mouth.

She died after allegedly being denied treatment at a private hospital in Bangkok.

Kamtan Singhanat was arrested at a friend’s house in Nakhon Sawan province on Sunday night and taken to Tha Kham police station in Bangkok.

Police were to stage a crime re-enactment later on Monday.

Mr Kamtam had only recently married the 38-year-old victim, Chorlada Tarawan. He is accused of pouring acid into her mouth and on her face on Saturday in a fit of jealousy.

The woman’s 12-year-old daughter rushed her by taxi for treatment, directing the driver to Bangmod Hospital in Chom Thong district. The driver instead took them to Praram 2 Hospital, a private hospital in Bang Khun Thien district, saying it was much closer and her condition was clearly dire.

Staff at Praram 2 Hospital later called a taxi to take the victim and her daughter to Bangmod Hospital. Chorlada reportedly died on the way.

Activist lawyer Atchariya Rueangratanapong accompanied two of the dead woman’s angry relatives to Praram 2 Hospital on Sunday, where they accused the hospital of failing to help her.

He said Praram 2 Hospital failed to have a doctor diagnose whether the case was critical or not, leading it to the move to have Chorlada transferred to another hospital.

“I think the diagnosis should have been made by a doctor, not a nurse. We want this case thoroughly investigated,” he said.

The hospital management reportedly said the patient wanted treatment at Bang Mod Hospital, where she had medical welfare coverage.

Staff at Praram 2 Hospital applied first aid and decided her condition was not critical. A nurse gave the daughter 40 baht to pay for a taxi.

Dr Nattavuth Prasersiripong, secretary-general of the Department of Health Service Support is launching an investigation to find out why Praram 2 Hospital failed to treat the woman properly.

“We will look into when and how the hospital provided treatment for the woman. Regarding the hospital’s claim it deferred to the woman’s request to go to another hospital, we must look into whether the hospital provided appropriate transportation,” Dr Nattavuth told reporters.

It’s mating season for elephants and as usual it means a bit of “intervention” from elephant handlers to prevent the situation from ending up with crushed cars and fleeing citizens.  More below from The Thaiger.

Kulsawek Sawekwannakorn has posted on Facebook about two elephants causing a traffic jam as they faced off on the Phusai to Sai-En Road near Hua Hin last Sunday morning.

Traffic was stopped for 20 minutes as pachyderms Bunchuay and Bunmee charged at each other. Because that’s what you do when you’re a horny bull elephant and vying for a lady elephant’s attention.

The cars would just have to wait it out. Park managers and very loud ‘elephant whisperers’ appeared to have the situation under control.

People on the video say that the elephants are in musth and drivers would just have to wait it out.  Musth is when male elephants can be very aggressive around each other and can be a danger to anyone or anything around at the time, including humans and cars.

PRACHIN BURI:  An ex-soldier is being hunted by police in the shooting injury of his girlfriend.

A former Saraburi-based cavalry soldier, Corporal Panuwat Pancheun, who was reportedly fired from service three months ago for assaulting his superior, has allegedly shot and injured his 28 year old girlfriend at her family’s home/grocery shop in Prachin Buri province this morning as he tried to drag her out to his car. Prachin Buri is two hour’s drive north-east of Bangkok.

Following the 9.30am shooting report at Tambon Pho Ngam in Prachantakham district, police inspected the scene and were told that the victim, factory worker Pornpan Putklang who sustained a gunshot wound in her upper right arm, had already been admitted to the district hospital, the case investigator, Pol Lt-Colonel Weerapol Sitthipan, said.

CCTV footage accessed by the police showed the male suspect arrive at the shop front in a Honda Civic sedan, get out of the vehicle with a pistol in his hand and grab Pornpan by the hair and force her to get into the backseat of the car.

When the woman resisted, the suspect allegedly shot her in the arm in front of witnesses, pushed her down and fled the scene.

Police suspect the couple had had a fight, resulting in the girlfriend declining to return to the house where she stayed with him and instead staying back in her family’s home. The former soldier then came after her, resulting in an argument and the shooting.
