Dark net, cryptocurrency a godsend for paedophiles in Thailand

February 19, 2020 By Udon Thani News

With a great number of people going online in Thailand, more and more children are being lured into participating in so-called live “shows” allegedly directed by paedophiles, child advocates warn.

Speaking at the “Protecting Children from Online Sexual Exploitation” seminar held by Thai Media Fund, Pol Capt Khemachart Prakaihongmanee, deputy director of the Bureau of Foreign Affairs and Transnational Crime at the Department of Special Investigation, said Thailand was experiencing a surge in paedophile activity, with predators orchestrating and watching abuse on live-streaming sites and via webcams, and paying for it with near-untraceable cryptocurrency.

“Paedophiles can now use an array of mobile and online tools — including social networks, video-sharing sites and the dark web — to direct and watch child rape and sexual abuse anonymously,” he said.

“It’s live, nothing is recorded … everything is encrypted. They sometimes pay in bitcoins, or encrypted money, which makes their transactions secure,” he added.

Pol Capt Khemachart also said that easy access to the net and money transfer services make Thailand a global hotspot for paedophilia.

According to data from the Digital Economy and Society Ministry, about 70% of the Thai population either owns or has access to a smartphone, while an estimated 67% of Thais also have access to the internet.

A study in 2018 showed that Thais aged between eight and 12 spend up to 35 hours per week on the net, which is three hours more than the global average, and that 60% of them are at risk of being exploited via online platforms.

Pol Capt Khemachart said that though many websites with child abuse content have been tracked down by Thai authorities and foreign agencies, he believes there is still a “phenomenal” number of inaccessible sites run by paedophiles on the so-called dark net.

The dark net are networks that can only be accessed using specific software that re-routes connections through several servers, allowing users to remain anonymous. Websites on the dark net are not indexed, which means they do not appear when looked for in a search engine like Google.

“Paedophiles sit somewhere in the dark net and access the internet to release material. The harder we work to remove the content, the harder they make it for us to find them,” he said. “There is still a phenomenal amount of questionable content out there.”

Pol Col Khemachart said in order to combat this issue, Thailand will have to improve its national database — a vital tool for finding and identifying both victims and perpetrators — as well as invest more to boost the capacity of law enforcers and police officers. He said Thailand should also consider recruiting more women to the police force.

Pol Col Sarawut Khonyai, deputy commissioner of the Provincial Police Region 6, said that while the internet offers a seemingly unlimited supply of potential victims, it also offers paedophiles a way of making money through the sale of sexually explicit photos and videos to online child pornography rings.

“This economic opportunity has created a new demographic of abusers, people who do not abuse children for personal pleasure, but do it to make money. Since the sale and purchase of child pornography is a crime, the money offered on the black market is quite high,” he said.

Pol Col Sarawut said this places a huge burden on the government and the school system, working to make children aware of the dangers of sexual abuse and online sex trafficking and prepare them to protect themselves and notify the authorities of suspicious behaviour.

Siriwan Vongkietpaisan, director of the Social Responsibility Legal Advocacy Work, said the media can play a vital role in getting the public to understand the changing patterns of child abuse, though they must be very careful when reporting as it can distress the victim.

Let me go! and I’ll give you a million bucks! Koh Phangan police not interested in UK / Israeli drug guy’s bribe attempt

February 18, 2020 By Udon Thani News

Police in Koh Phangan have announced the arrest of a foreign man in what they say is a bust of a big drug dealer on the holiday island in southern Thailand.

Arrested at a luxury house in Ban Tai, Koh Phangan on Saturday was 44 year old Gild Yohai, a British national with Israeli heritage, said Manager.

Found in a bedroom at his house were ecstasy, ketamine, cocaine, two types of ganja, scales and plastic bags for distributing the drugs. He admitted at the police station that it was all his.

He then asked to see an officer in charge and offered to pay one million dollars in a bribe.

When the police refused, he started to show signs of stress and began to make trouble, said Manager, going on about a Mr Big who would be informed.

Police had investigated the suspect after he appeared to be living a flamboyant lifestyle – but didn’t appear to have a job.

Pol Lt-Col Thanawat Sukhata said this was no ordinary suspect in a drugs case. He was a big player.

He said that the suspect has six Russian girlfriends and two children. He is in the process of purchasing a 30 million baht house of which 2 million has so far been paid.

He drives around Koh Phangan in a kind of army jeep.

Manager described him as a mafia poser.

He has been charged with possession of drugs with intent to sell and is in the custody of the Koh Phangan police.

(UPDATE) Gunman kills ex-wife at Bangkok shopping mall days after mass shooting

February 18, 2020 By Udon Thani News

BANGKOK (Reuters) – A man killed his ex-wife and wounded another person at a shopping centre in Bangkok on Tuesday, police said, 10 days after a mass shooting at another mall in Thailand’s northeast.

The gunman then fled the Century The Movie Plaza, near the Thai capital’s Victory Monument and is still on the run, Thai police said.

“One person died and another was injured,” police Colonel Kissana Pattanacharoen told Reuters.

Police said in a statement they knew the suspect’s identity and were working to apprehend him.

The gunman entered a beauty clinic at the mall where his ex-wife worked and opened fire, killing her and wounding a bystander, Kissana said.

The nine-storey mall, best known for its top-floor cinema, was continuing to operate and only the area where the shooting took place was cordoned off.

The plaza is connected to the Victory Monument skytrain station, a transit hub that was crowded with commuters in the late afternoon rush hour.

Ten days before, a soldier killed at least a dozen people at the Terminal 21 shopping centre in the northeastern city of Nakhon Ratchasima. He had earlier killed his commanding officer, other soldiers at his base and several people at a Buddhist temple.

Four people in custody accused of spreading fake news about coronavirus

February 18, 2020 By Udon Thani News

Four people have been arrested by police, for allegedly spreading fake news about the COVID-19 virus, in coordinated raids in four provinces.

Armed with search warrants, officials from the Ministry Digital for Economy and Society, Technology Crime Suppression Division and provincial authorities raided houses in Bo Win district of Chon Buri, Ban Po district of Chachoengsao province and Muang districts of Chiang Mai and Nan provinces, from where fake news about the virus is suspected to have originated.

The suspects were held in police custody before being taken to the Technology Crime Suppression Division for further questioning.

One item of fake news, allegedly posted on social media by someone in the Bo Win district of Chon Buri, reads “H3N2 spreads to Chiang Mai. New Coronavirus from Wuhan”.

The fake news caused panic among people in Chiang Mai, claimed an official.

Members of the public have been warned that, if they post or share fake news on social media, they will face legal action.

9 -day Songkran under consideration

February 18, 2020 By Udon Thani News

April 11-19 being considered to shore up travel

The government is considering adding two more public holidays during the Songkran festival to bolster the sagging tourism sector, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said on Monday.

Gen Prayut admitted the nine-day holiday for the Thai New Year celebrations is under consideration but he did not give the timeline for the final call.

“The final decision has not been made yet,” he said.

The Songkran holiday are from April 13-15 every year. This year, it starts Monday through Wednesday. When taking into account Saturday and Sunday preceding them, the holiday is five days long.

Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak came up with an idea of extending the Songkran period this year to cover Thursday and Friday as well, making it a nine-day holiday (April 11-19). The long period will encourage more people to travel and spend money to give the tourism industry a boost after a sharp drop of tourist numbers from China, he said.

According to his plan, the extra two days are not for free — two public holidays in the second half of the year might be cut to compensate them if the plan is approved.

The Covid-19 epidemic, which started in China in December, is taking its toll on Thai tourism as people avoid travelling around the globe. China has banned tour groups in a bid to contain the virus and the Chinese are Thailand’s largest tourist group.

Gen Prayut said the long holiday would help tourism operators.

Tourism accounts for 20% of gross domestic product and creates 2 million jobs.
