Australian refugee Football Player Faces Deportation After Arrest In Thailand

November 30, 2018 By Udon Info Admin

AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL PLAYER DETAINED

Hakeem Al-Araibi says he was arrested on an Interpol red notice for his conviction over an act of vandalism in Bahrain which he denies. Photograph: Hakeem Al-Araibi for the Guardian

A refugee football player who lives in Australia has been detained in Thailand and is facing deportation back to the country he fled from, where he fears violence and persecution.

Hakeem Al-Araibi told Guardian Australia he was arrested on an Interpol red notice for his conviction over an act of vandalism in Bahrain which he denies and says allegedly happened while he was playing in a televised football game.

Since 2015 Interpol has said it would not allow red notices against confirmed refugees and asylum seekers from the countries they fled from.

The 25-year-old has spent two days in detention at a Bangkok airport and told Guardian Australia he was scared and unable to eat, fearing that he would be sent back to Bahrain.

“When I arrived at immigration in Thailand they took me to detention and said you have a red notice from Bahrain,” he said from detention.

“I told them I am a refugee in Australia. I said [Bahrain] is not allowed to take me … I have been in Australia for four and a half years now.

“But they took me to detention. Still now I don’t know what’s happening.”

Al-Araibi arrived in Australia in 2015 and was granted refugee status and permanent residency in Australia three years later.

A former member of Bahrain’s national football team, he has previously described being tortured and beaten by authorities who had accused him and other football players of setting fire to a police station, and he was sentenced in absentia to 10 years in jail.

Al-Araibi denies the charge and claims he was playing in a televised football match at the time of the alleged incident.

The players and their families are believed to have been targeted for their involvement in peaceful protests against the ruling family during the Arab Spring of 2011.

Interpol’s online database contained no valid red notice under various spellings of Al-Araibi’s name, but he said Thai authorities had shown it to him.

“Australian Embassy officials in Bangkok are in direct contact with Thai authorities regarding this issue,” a spokeswoman for the Australian department of foreign affairs and trade said. “Owing to our privacy obligations we will not provide further comment.”

Al-Araibi’s support team have expressed concern that he would get less assistance from the Australian government because he is not a citizen, and called for urgent action to prevent his deportation to Bahrain.

“I spoke to someone from the Australian embassy in Thailand. She said just wait for immigration in Thailand because she sent them more information,” said Al-Araibi.

He said he checked with Australian and Thai authorities before leaving, and both had assured him of his safety.

A number of the players targeted alongside Al-Araibi were also reportedly granted refuge in Australia, where Al-Araibi now plays for a Melbourne team.

He has since publicly spoken against Sheikh Salman Alkhalifa, cousin of the Bahraini king and current president of the Asian Football Confederation, doing multiple interviews with media while Alkhalifa campaigned for the presidency of Fifa.

“Hakeem is a refugee accepted by Australia, so Thailand should do the right thing by sending him back to Australia on the next flight,” said Sunai Phasuk, senior researcher for Thailand, Human Rights Watch.

“Under no circumstances should Thai immigration authorities hand him over to Bahrain, where he faces 10 years in prison on a politically motivated conviction and a repeat of the torture he experienced before he fled. Sending him back to Bahrain would be a heartless act that violates Thailand’s obligations to protect refugees and will surely result in global condemnation.”

Sayed Ahmed Alwadaei, the director of Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy, said: “Interpol has violated its obligations, as Hakeem holds refugee status and returning him to Bahrain puts him at significant risk of torture and imprisonment.

“His deportation would undoubtedly damage the reputation of Interpol’s newly-elected president early into his tenure.”

Al-Araibi’s wife, Naqaa Sateeh, has travelled to Thailand to see him, but can only visit for five minutes at a time, Al-Araibi said.

“I was relieved when Australia has given him a protection visa but I am sick, worried to death now that he could be deported to Bahrain at any moment,” she said.

Interpol and Thai immigration authorities have been contacted for comment.

159 UNDERAGE DRINKERS @ UDON THANI PUB RAID

Udon Thani provincial administration officials and Army troops raided a pub in Muang district early on Thursday and found 159 underage drinkers inside.

From The Nation

The raid against the Night Bar on the Thaharn Road in Tambon Mak Khaeng in Muang district was led by Udon Thani governor Pramote Thanyapuet at 1.30am.

The officials found that customers were still drinking and dancing after the 1am closing hour.

Authorities then checked customers’ ID cards and found that two of them were under 15, three under 17 and 144 are between 18 and 19 years old.

Thani said the raid was conducted following complaints that the bar allowed teens under 20 inside.

He said the owner of the bar will be charged with violating the closing hour, selling alcoholic drinks after permitted hours, and allowing persons under 20 to go inside an entertainment place and selling alcoholic drinks to persons under 20.

Delivery Man Who Knocked Down Schoolgirl While Riding On Sidewalk Charged By Police

November 29, 2018 By Udon Info Admin

Screenshot: Thai PBS, Twitter: Photo/@EmaEmika

A 23-year-old messenger was charged by police yesterday for knocking down a high school student while he was riding on the sidewalk in a rush to make a delivery in Lat Phrao district on Monday afternoon.

Puwadol Srisamrong, 23, met with the police yesterday and is facing charges of causing harm due to reckless driving, driving on the sidewalk without a reasonable cause, and driving without regard to the safety of others, Pol. Col. Suphol Khamchu of Chok Chai police said.

The delivery man gained quick notoriety yesterday after allegedly crashing his bike into 16-year-old Kulanee Chanthornwithoon while she was walking home from school with a friend around 3pm on Monday outside Lat Phrao Soi 69, according to Amarin TV.

Kulanee said in a broadcast interview that she saw a motorbike riding towards her, and the next thing she knew she was on the floor.

The student was sent to Paolo Hospital nearby with muscle inflammation. Luckily, she did not break any bones.

Meanwhile, Puwadol stated that he felt extremely guilty and waited for police at the scene. He has also visited Kulanee in the hospital to apologize.

The messenger explained that he was riding on the sidewalk in order to to make a fast delivery at the time of the incident but claimed to have learned his lesson.

“I’m really sorry. From now on I’m not going to be so careless again,” he said.

But many netizens questioned whether Thai police or other motorcyclists have learned their lesson from this accident, which triggered mass outrage on social media after Twitter user @EmaEmika shared a photo of its aftermath.

In the picture, an injured Kulanee can be seen lying on the floor surrounded by pedestrians offering aid.

“I see people driving on the sidewalk every single day. Sometimes I see police around at the same time but they don’t do anything. Why bother making it a law then?” wrote one  commenter.

“I’ve even seen police driving on sidewalks. What can we expect from them?” wrote another.

This is the second time in just the last two months that a footpath motorbiker went viral. In October, famed British Grand Prix motorbike racer Scott Redding created an Instagram story bashing Bangkok motorcyclists who he filmed unapologetically riding on the sidewalk.

Smiling Buffalo Owner Hit With Fraud Charges

BANGKOK — A farmer who crowdfunded the purchase of a buffalo he had bonded with was charged Tuesday afternoon with fraud, money laundering and violating the Computer Crime Act.

After surrendering the buffalo to the police this morning, Surat Phaeoket was charged with serious crimes punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a 200,000 baht fine, one day after the official he bought the animal from accused him of defrauding donors with misleading statements.

Surat will be brought in for questioning, Col. Singh Singhdet of Khan Na Yao police said Tuesday.

Photos of man and buffalo became an online sensation earlier this month, and netizens chipped in the money needed for him to buy the animal outright. Surat last week purchased Tongkum from Boonlert Kanpakdee, a subdistrict mayor who set a price of 100,000 baht for the 4-year-old bull.

After the deal was done, Boonlert complained to the police he was embarrassed by what happened and alleged the funds had been illegally obtained. He said Surat made misleading statements about the animal’s predicament; Surat denies doing so.

Smiling Buffalo Seized by Police, Impounded as Evidence

By Asaree Thaitrakulpanich, Staff Reporter

Tongkum is led off the truck that brought him from Chai Nat province Tuesday and into Bangkok’s Khan Na Yao Police Station.

CHAI NAT – An impoverished farmer in the central province of Chai Nat was in tears Tuesday morning when police arrived to confiscate the beloved buffalo he’d just purchased with the help of online donors.

Surat Phaeoket had to lead Tongkum the buffalo onto a truck after the animal’s seller, a local government official, complained to police he had not wanted to sell the now-famous buffalo. Police said the farmer committed fraud by crowdfunding the money used to buy the buffalo and have frozen his accounts.

“I don’t want to cry anymore,” an upset sounding Surat said several hours later. “When leading him onto the truck, I told him that he will come back to our home to be with me together soon. I told him to wait just a few more days.”

Tongkum was taken to Bangkok’s Khan Na Yao Police Station, where he will remain until the court decides who owns him.

Around back, reporters were led past a cutout of Col. Singh Singhdet, the station chief, in cowboy gear to a corral containing a shed wrapped with mosquito netting. There, officers said they would take turns trying to bring the smile back to Tongkum’s face.

“The environment should still be good for him,” said one cop on the scene now tasked with buffalo care. “It’s still a natural environment.”

Surat said the animal’s well-being will suffer.

Tongkum at the Khan Na Yao Police Station on Tuesday.

“I’m so worried about him. He needs to play in water all the time and roll in mud so he can be protected from mosquitoes. He also eats a lot of grass,” Surat said.

Singh said he believes Surat misled the public about the seriousness of Tongkum’s situation.

“Surat exploited people’s pity to solicit money, which is illegal,” Singh said.

Boonlert Kanpakdee, Tongkum’s former owner and a lesser local official in Chai Nat, called Surat a beggar Monday for appealing online for the 100,000 baht he used to buy Tongkum after the pair became internet famous.

Surat denies making any misleading statements in his public appeal.

“I will do my best to show my innocence. I will ask for legal help,” Surat said. He said he did not have legal representation.

Boonlert was accompanied Monday to the police station by a media-hungry attorney who said he’d donated 100 baht and had now taken it back. He and one other had come forward to reclaim their donations, Singh said.

A police officer washes Tongkum on Tuesday at the Khan Na Yao police station.

Singh said that Boonlert did indeed name a price of 100,000 baht for Tongkum. He said that Surat posted a video clip of himself crying and asking for money lest Tongkum be killed.

Surat denies making such a clip. None could be found online. He did make appeals for support through various media channels, some of which embellished his tale including a few news accounts that the buffalo faced the slaughterhouse.

“Surat really does love buffaloes. He wanted this buffalo so much because he has a female one he wants [Tongkhum] to mate with,” Singh said. “If both sides fight it out, then he’ll stay here for a long time.”

96 year old perishes in Udon Thani house fire

Udon Thani News | Udon Thani House Fire

By The Thaiger & The Nation

A 96 year old, bedridden woman has died in a locked room at her house in Udon Thani’s Phen district on this morning. Fire swiftly and completely engulfed the building according to neighbours.

The fire spread from the home of Phan Manee and also damaged a neighbour’s house. Fire-fighters spent about an hour extinguishing the blaze before Phan’s body could be recovered.

Her daughter Saeng Manee and son-in-law Boonseng Chaokla were not at home at the time.

Neighbour Joi Janthana, whose house was also damaged, said he heard an explosion from the direction of Phan’s house and saw the flames.

He ran to attempt a rescue but found her ground-floor bedroom locked. He shouted for help but the fire spread too quickly.

Police suspect a short circuit among ageing power cables could have sparked the fire.
